Discovery Channel’s decision to cancel its popular "American Guns" reality show didn’t sit well with many viewers, some of whom took to social media to express their anger and dissatisfaction.

Although the network said the show wasn’t canceled because of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which killed 20 children and six adults, show fans said they thought the decision was anti-gun.

"If Discovery wants to be political then I shall take my conservative views to another channel,” one person wrote on a Deadline article about the show.

"American Guns was excellent show. The shooting in Connecticut was a terriable event. But it is time to stop punishing everyone who want to own a firearm," another agreed.

In the weeks following the school shooting in December 2012, other networks canceled or rescheduled episodes of shows that depicted violence that seemed inappropriate in the circumstances.

The Sandy Hook school shooting and others like it ramped up discussions about gun violence, and even those in the entertainment industry pointed to issues with frequent movie and television violence.

"We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn't have a sort of influence," actor Jamie Foxx told The Associated Press. "It does."

But others, like director Quentin Tarantino, disagreed. Responsible for such violent movies as "Kill Bill," Tarentino said he’s tired of defending his movies.

Online, fans of “American Guns” thought the tie-in of guns to the Sandy Hook shooting was not accurate.

“Will Discovery/PBS cancel all cooking shows — because there are 100’s more deaths from knives than guns,” one person wrote on the Deadline article. “Are they going to cancel shows about Chicago — there have been almost 50 deaths in under three months — that would be 50 killers — not to mention those who did not die. Dumb excuse to stop the show.”
