Contrary to popular opinion that a battle with dengue fever lead to the untimely death of professional surfer Andy Irons, the legend’s family has released a statement revealing that Irons died from a heart attack caused by the hardening of his coronary arteries.
It has been said that Irons was genetically predisposed to heart disease. Statements from Irons’ family members, however, may not give the whole story concerning the 32-year-old’s tragic passing. Reports have shown that a heart attack was not the sole factor in Irons’ death.
Autopsy results list a second cause of death: “acute mixed drug ingestion.” Present in Irons’ blood were methadone, the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, and Benzoylecgonine — commonly produced by the body following the use of cocaine.
TMZ reports that Irons’ wife Lyndie denies that her husband took methadone, a drug used both as a pain-killer and to combat opioid dependence, and that it is “likely the substance was present in the cocaine he ingested.”
Despite the results of toxicology reports performed during the autopsy, Irons’ family insists that drugs played no part in the surfer’s November 2010 death.
