1. Inflammation can lead to joint stiffness, swelling, redness, warmth and tenderness surrounding the joint. Osteoarthritis usually causes pain, stiffness, or inflammation in the hips, knees, and hands, according to Medical News Today. Rheumatoid arthritis may shows signs and symptoms in the hands and wrists, and it can also cause symptoms in areas of the body where there are no joints.

2. Some people experience a crunching or crackling feeling or sound during movements of affected joints. It could feel like bone rubbing against bone, Arthritis.com said. Over time erosion of bones may occur, not only causing pain but also leading to deformity in the affected area. Swelling of the joints can eventually damage ligaments, which hold the joints together, as well as the bone and cartilage.

3. Flare-ups may occur periodically, especially with rheumatoid arthritis, then go through periods of remission when there are no symptoms, Healthline reported.

4. Signs may pop up during periods of activity and inactivity. You might experience pain after using the joint, but stiffness may also occur when you are inactive for a long time, especially after sleeping or sitting for long periods.

5. Some arthritis signs and symptoms aren't necessarily focused on the joints. Fever and a feeling of not being well can occur. Fatigue and weight loss might result from arthritis. Certain organs of the body, such as the heart, lungs, or kidneys, can be affected by certain forms of arthritis, as well.
