Barack Obama Signature Style: Late Night TV Had Field Day With President's Mom Jeans

By    |   Tuesday, 25 November 2014 07:15 PM EST

The president just couldn’t seem to escape the Barack Obama signature mom jeans that made him the center of jokes starting in 2009. The baggy, saggy, and short jeans he wore to throw out the first pitch at the Major League All-Star game almost destroyed the president’s image as a fashion plate.

Late night comedians have since had a field day with Obama’s choice of jeans. Obama was even compelled to phone into “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” to address the issue when it popped up this year, saying he had been “unfairly maligned” about his mom jeans. “The truth is, generally, I look very sharp in my jeans.”

During the 2012 campaign, David Letterman was trying to get candidate Mitt Romney to appear on his show and even told TV viewers not to vote for him if the candidate didn’t take his offer. He went on to simulate a Romney interview with actor Jack Black, who was dressed in mom jeans pulled up high in Barack Obama signature fashion.

Political figures got into the act as well with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin appearing on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." A sketch included Fallon as Putin and Palin as “grizzly mama.” When Palin mentions Putin is a strong leader, Fallon answers as Putin, “I come from strong genes. President Obama, he comes from mom jeans!” It was a take on Palin’s recent remark that Putin looks like he wrestles bears and drills for oil while Obama “wears mom jeans and equivocates and bloviates.”

John Stewart still picked up on the image when Obama’s strategy on dealing with ISIS terrorists in Iraq took a stronger turn. The president had been criticized for a confusing strategy until he announced the U.S. would ultimately destroy ISIS. Stewart took the occasion on his Comedy Central program, "The Daily Show With John Stewart" to add his support, but he couldn’t resist referencing the fashion faux pas. Saying Obama broke out his “I killed Osama” strut, he stressed, “Our mom-jeans-wearing, socialist, Muslim, dictator, tyrant, pacifist went full ‘America, f— yeah!’”
