Barack Obama Wartime Address Highlights: 5 Quotes From Speech

By    |   Friday, 22 May 2015 11:51 AM EDT

Barack Obama's tenure as president of the United States has not always gone smoothly. The United States has been at war for much of Obama's presidency and has been involved either directly or indirectly in the war against terror.

The crowning achievement of the Obama administration in terms of wartime that both Republicans and Democrats can agree on is the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

This was a major success both strategically and ideologically for Obama and the U.S. in the war on terror as well as for the American people in retribution for the events of 9/11.

In light of this, here are five quotes from Obama that represent his opinions and beliefs during wartime:

1. "I understand why war is not popular, but I also know this: The belief that peace is desirable is rarely enough to achieve it. Peace requires responsibility. Peace entails sacrifice."-  During his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway. Obama went on to connect and use these lines to bolster his support for NATO. He also affirms his belief that the U.N. and other peacekeeping organizations should be strengthened.

2. "Let us think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11. I know that it has, at times, frayed. Yet, today's achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people." - Address to the nation on May 1, 2011 regarding the death of bin Laden. Many consider this to be the high point of the Obama administration during wartime.

3. "What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war." - From a 2002 address that then Senator Obama gave in Chicago in opposition to the Iraq war. He clearly states his opinion in direct opposition of conservative voices, such as Paul Wolfowitz.

4. "So long as I'm Commander-in-Chief, we will sustain the strongest military the world has ever known." - In a statement in 2012 at the Democratic National Convention. It is interesting to note his previous hesitance to go to war juxtaposed with this statement implying the importance of a strong military.

5. "I said that America's role would be limited; that we would not put ground troops into Libya" - His 2011 address to the nation on Libya, where the president defends the limited role of the U.S. military in Libya, following his general line of reduced military intervention.
