1. Tornado by the American Red Cross
The American Red Cross has created this free app for iPhone and Android users to provide weather alerts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The app sounds an alarm when a tornado warning has been issued and alerts users when the tornado warning is no longer in effect. Other features include a one-touch “I’m safe” message and preloaded information that is available even if phone lines go down, according to the American Red Cross.

2. The Weather Channel
The Weather Channel has created a free app for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Windows Phone users that provides real-time weather updates, interactive radar, weather alerts, and reliable weather forecasts.

3. TornadoSpy+
This app is $2.99 and available to iPhone and iPad users. According to its creator, Justin Time, the app is able to spot storms and send out tornado warnings before the NOAA, based on user reports. When users spot a storm they can send out real-time warnings that are received by all users immediately. The app uses AccuSpy technology to filter out false alerts to ensure only accurate sightings are reported with subsequent alerts.

4. RadarScope
This app is available for a one-time fee of $10 for iOS and Android users and is used by professional storm chasers and meteorologists to track the paths of storms and tornadoes. The app gives real-time information about the distance of the user relative to the storm or tornado.

5. StormEye
This free app is available for Android and iOS users and offers local storm details from the National Weather Service. Information such as hail size and storm path, location, and intensity is provided.

6. NOAA Weather Radio
This app offers traditional radio services via a smartphone and is available for $3.99 for Android and iOS. The app provides radio announcements, alerts, emergency warnings, and weather reports.

7. Storm Shield
The Storm Shield App is available for $2.99. It sends out real-time alerts based on users’ locations and allows users to share alerts to warn friends and family. The app also sends out voice alerts to wake users when they are sleeping.
