5 Biggest Cities in Texas: How Well Do You Know The Lone Star State?

By    |   Thursday, 09 April 2015 01:53 PM EDT

The Alamo, Jim Bowie and the American Civil War: Texas has deep roots in U.S. history. And each of its largest cities have played important roles throughout the years.

Let's take a look at Texas' biggest cities and significant events that helped shape them:

1. Houston

Houston has more than 2 million residents and is named for the former U.S. senator and Tennessee governor who is attributed to causing dissent among local Texans. This dissent turned into the Alamo Battle and led to Texas' independence. Located in Harris County, Houston also is home to Major League Baseball's Astros and the National Football League's Texans.

2. San Antonio

Texas' second largest city is world-renowned as playing host to the Alamo. It was here a group of local Texans and Santa Anna's troops faced off. San Antonio also is home to one of the nation's premiere shopping and entertainment districts, River Walk and the National Basketball Association's San Antonio Spurs.

3. Dallas

Considered one of the fastest growing cities in America, Dallas has more than 1 million residents. While Dallas still is considered a young city, it has a deep and rich history. It is here the NFL's Cowboys and NBA's Mavericks call home. Dallas also was the location of one of America's saddest moments — President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

4. Austin

Texas' capital comes in at fourth place with nearly 800,000 residents. Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin boasts many successful country, R&B and soul artists who became celebrities. Austin was officially created in 1839 as the capital of the Texas Republic. Leaders named the city after its founder Stephen F. Austin.

5. Fort Worth

With more than 700,000 residents, Fort Worth is the fifth largest city in the Lone Star State. Located in Tarrant County, the city is divided into three districts — cultural, stockyard and Sundance square. While Fort Worth has many amazing facts and a rich culture, this is the only place in the world visitors can visit Billy Bob's Texas — the world's largest honky tonk.
