Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has made his mark on national politics as the first Indian American elected governor. His conservative views and accomplishments would make a 2016 presidential candidate to consider.
Here are seven key political positions he has taken as governor and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives:
1. “In the aftermath of September 11th, it is critical to secure our borders,” Jindal has said. He has noted that illegal immigration has led to higher unemployment for Americans. As a congressman and governor, Jindal has endorsed English as the official language of the U.S. and as the only language for government services.

2. He remained strong on energy policies, even through his state’s disasters. While a congressman, he worked hard to pass legislation for his state’s recovery following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He received high praise for recovery efforts in Louisiana after Hurricane Gustav and the BP oil spill disaster in 2010. Jindal attacked the federal government because of a slow response to the spill and for the moratorium on drilling, which he said hurt the economy. He favors overall expansion of renewables, nuclear power, and drilling.
3. Jindal is a supporter of tax reform, including the elimination of the income tax in Louisiana. He noted that the complex tax code hinders job creation and the economy. “Eliminating income taxes will help make Louisiana the very best place to start a business,” he said. “This is the best way to grow our economy and create good-paying jobs throughout the state.”
4. A Bobby Jindal 2016 campaign would include an emphasis on the free market. On Obamacare and economic issues, Jindal stresses that Republicans focus on bold reform proposals instead of an anti-Obama platform. In contrast to the Democrats’ “top-down, government approach,” Jindal favors “bottom-up” policies that give people control over their economic lives. As governor he eliminated burdensome business taxes.

5. Jindal has made it clear he is pro-life since his days as a congressman. He voted against expanding research for embryonic stem cells and voted for restricting intestate transport of minors to get abortions.
6. Gun owners would favor a Bobby Jindal 2016 presidential run. As a congressman in 2005, Jindal voted in favor of prohibiting misuse of lawsuits against gun manufacturers in the wake of gun violence. He also voiced his objections to gun registration and trigger lock laws in Washington, D.C.
7. Jindal introduced a health care alternative to Obamacare through his America Next organization, giving Republicans a positive response to the Affordable Care Act. He is a strong proponent of shifting health care to the free marketplace with fewer government-run programs.
