In 2015, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation that banned most vaccine exemptions in the state.
According to NBC News, unvaccinated children are only eligible for school if they receive a doctor’s note. After a measles outbreak at Disneyland and an alarming number of unvaccinated children in the state, the new law reversed California’s vaccination policy, once considered to hold the most relaxed vaccine policies in the nation; California has now put in place very strict rules regarding mandatory vaccinations.
Since the signing of the strict vaccine law, many California residents have spoken out to the press and online to express their disappointment with the regulation.

Comedian Jim Carrey made news when he took to Twitter to condemn Gov. Brown’s action, claiming some vaccinations were dangerous.
Among the many Californians to oppose the new harsh vaccination policy was Democratic Assemblyman Mike Gatto from Glendale, saying that it infringed on the freedoms of the state’s citizens.
"Those who are at risk for contracting disease can still be exposed by riding on an airplane or going to the doctor; therefore, the state using it to infringe on the rights of certain students to attend school doesn't make sense," said Gatto,
according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Pediatrician Robert Sears, who campaigned against the law believes not all parents will comply with the state’s newest regulations. "Forcing parents to choose between vaccines and school is unnecessary and unfair,” said Sears,
according to USA Today.
“I predict that more families will shift into homeschooling and co-op, home-based educational programs over this, rather than feel coerced into doing something they don't feel is right for their child. Even more families will lose trust in the government and the medical system," said Sears.
