Best Classic Love Story Movies According to Rotten Tomatoes

For the hopeless romantic, a classic love story movie is the best choice. Some of the greatest films ever made fall in the love story category, leaving footprints in our hearts and tears in our eyes. These movies stay alive for generations.

Here are some of the best classic love story movies to hit the big screen, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

1. "Casablanca" (1942)
This Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman film is considered a Hollywood masterpiece of love and romance that solidified the star's careers. The all-star cast combined and memorable romance has placed this film among the classics.

"Nobody lights a torch like Ingrid Bergman's Ilsa or carries one like Humphrey Bogart's Rick," wrote Chicago Tribune critic Michael Wilmington.

2. "Gone With the Wind" (1939)
The story evolves around a woman and her hopeless love for a married man, based on a Margaret Mitchell novel. The film won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

"No one watches 'Gone with the Wind' for historical accuracy. What keeps us coming back is four hours of epic romance in gorgeous Technicolor," wrote Cath Clarke in Time Out.

3. "Roman Holiday" (1953)
Audrey Hepburn plays a princess who vacates her royal duties to spend 24 hours with a reporter. What ensues is a Cinderella-like story of romance that sets the standard for modern films.

"Immaculately directed by William Wyler, and written and played with style and grace, this is a film to treasure, both for its endearing action and marvelous performances," wrote Tony Sloman for Radio Times.

4. "Beauty and the Beast" (1946)
The film has components of a garden, a forbidden flower and a "beast" that falls in love with a young girl. The beast vows to die of grief if the young girl does now return to him.

Christian Science Monitor writer David Sterritt calls the film a "timeless fairy tale about a young woman who agrees to dwell with a mysterious monster, as interpreted in 1946 by one of cinema's most brilliant visual stylists and mythmakers."
