Cruise News: 5 Ways to Make Your Trip More Enjoyable

By    |   Tuesday, 31 May 2016 11:02 AM EDT

A little planning and forethought can go a long way toward helping travelers get the most out of a cruise vacation. Here are five ways to make your cruise more enjoyable.

1. Get an early start — Avoid unexpected trouble by arriving at the port city the night before the cruise is set to begin, the Travel Channel recommends. The extra time will allow a relaxed start to the trip and prevent the last-minute rush and stress that can come with delayed flights, traffic, and bad weather.

2. Upgrade your cabin — Splurging on a balcony or suite brings with it numerous benefits, including private lounging on days at sea, comfortable room-service dinners, and V.I.P. perks such as priority tendering and first-choice reservations, Cruise Critic notes.

3. Plan a special event — Dressing up for a formal night can add a special touch to your cruise vacation, Cruise Critic advises. Other options include ordering deliveries of flowers, fruit baskets, candy, or other items to your stateroom. Most cruise lines will make accommodations such as a cake or a special menu to celebrate a special occasion.

4. Plan ahead — Cruises offer plenty of options to tailor your vacation around your personal preferences. Decide whether you want to relax on your own or join in on structured activities and excursions. Once you know what you want to participate in, make your reservations early and check activities lists daily, USA Today recommends. Planning early will help prevent missing out on a desired experience, and staying aware of your options will put you in a better position to make alternate plans if a scheduled event falls through.

5. Pace yourself — With more than enough options for dining and entertainment onboard a cruise ship, it's easy to become overwhelmed. Don’t try to do everything, travel writer Rick Stevens recommends, according to NBC News. Avoid congestion by seeking out quiet spots, such as the bow of the ship at night or the top deck after dinner.
