What Is an Elliptical Trainer?

Thursday, 23 December 2010 09:18 AM EST

Exercising is key to staying fit, but not everyone can have the benefit of working out in a gym. An alternative is an elliptical machine that combines a  treadmill, stair climber, exercise cycle, and ski machine into one low-impact machine that takes care of your cardiovascular workout while toning your muscles.

An elliptical trainer, also known as an elliptical cross trainer, provides an upper and lower body cardiovascular workout by simulating walking and running, but at a gentle pace. This reduces the risk of impact injury.

There are a few variations in this machine. Some elliptical trainers provide handlebars attached to the pedals, which enable the user to have an upper body workout, while some others come with the capability to vary the incline, resistance, and stride length.

Some of these machines have the capability to be operated backward and forward. The machines can be either operated electrically or powered by the lower body motion of the user. The simultaneous movement of the hands and legs provides a dual source of driving power. This helps burn more calories in lesser time as the whole body is working out.

Working out on an elliptical trainer, or cross trainer, can be compared to working out on a treadmill. The best part is that you can easily use it at home, without disturbing the neighbors or having to rush to any fitness club. You might find some of these elliptical machines in the gym. But do remember, they are designed to burn calories, not build muscles!

Nordic Track elliptical machines are the next-generation fitness equipment in the series of elliptical machines. These machines are robust and capable of heavy use, and yet offer a perfect solution for home workout. You wouldn’t require a trainer if you have one of these. What’s more, these machines do not take up much space; they can be folded for storage.
