Last June, Elton John took plenty of flak for performing at conservative heavyweight Rush Limbaugh’s wedding. He responds to the criticism in this month’s issue of Rolling Stone, giving Limbaugh credit for his views on gay marriage.
John sites a conversation he had with Limbaugh before the performance in which Rush told him that he wasn’t anti-gay, even urging Elton to bring partner David with him to the wedding.
John tells Rolling Stone that he wishes Limbaugh would come out and announce that he supports civil partnerships, but is quick to applaud Rush for being one of the first people to congratulate him on his recent adoption.
In the audience at Limbaugh’s wedding were many conservative elite, including Clarence Thomas, but John says that they were his best audience of the year.
When asked by Rolling Stone why he played the event for someone who is so diametrically opposed to his social and political views, John eloquently replied, “The only way you ever solve anything is by communicating, by planting seeds. And America is so divisive. I want to knock down walls and build bridges.”
