Four of the five top employers in New Mexico are in the state's largest city, Albuquerque while the fifth is in Los Alamos. Many of Albuquerque's 555,000-plus residents rely on the employers for jobs in fields including education, government, publishing, and medical.

Here are the top five employers in New Mexico:

1. University of New Mexico:
Located in Albuquerque, it's not surprising that the University of New Mexico is also the state's largest employer. With about 12,000 jobs, the university is "noted for its beautiful campus and distinctive pueblo-style architecture," according to U.S. News & World Report. The school also offers more than 200 types of degree programs.

2. Los Alamos National Laboratory: New Mexico has a history of innovation, with the first atomic bomb detonating in the state as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project. Now, the Land of Enchantment draws over 11,000 scientists, technologists and support staff interested in "applied theoretical research in applied and fundamental nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology," according to the Los Alamos National Laboratory website.

3. Albuquerque Journal Retail: Perhaps surprisingly, the Albuquerque Journal Retail employs 7,000 staff, making it the third largest employer in the state. In 2014, it was recognized as a top workplace "based solely on surveys about the workplace completed by their employees," as stated in the Albuquerque Journal.

It also "serves as the primary teaching hospital for the UNM School of Medicine and participates in hundreds of advanced clinical trials annually," according to the college's website.

5. Albuquerque Health Partners LLC.: The second healthcare employer among the top five employers in New Mexico, Albuquerque Health Partners accounts for more than 5,000 jobs, which are comprised of  "over 900 total teammates, including 149 physicians and 79 Mid-levels as of October 6, 2014," according to their website.
