The old saying is true, things are bigger in Texas, including the jobs. After dominating the Fortune 500 list last year, the Lone Star State sets its eyes on larger investments and increased job pools.

A look at some of the largest employers in Texas, from schools to technology, gives a great picture of the state's economic diversity.

1. Texas A&M University

Texas A&M University employs 50,000 people in Texas. Jobs range from teaching to technology and research. The university attributes its success to its strong values and focus on people.

2. Shell Deepwater Inc.

Texas is known for its Texas Tea, and this top industry is attributed to nearly 60 percent of all Texas jobs. Shell prides itself on contributing 44,000 positions to this job pool. The company operates drilling rigs, refineries and corporate offices in more than 70 countries, according to company information.

3. Perot Systems Corp.


While Ross Perot may have lost the presidential election, Texas still benefits from his policies and procedures. Located in Plano, Texas, Perot Systems employs more than 23,000 workers. Most of these workers are employed in the data processing units or social engagement industry.

4. Dell Inc.

It’s only natural for Dell to make Texas its home. After all, Texas inventors did create the first circuit boards and pocket calculator. Dell employs more than 20,000 workers at its corporate headquarters and manufacturing plants. And the company attributes its employ success rate to an open, caring and friendly environment.

5. University of Texas at Austin

Wrapping up the top employers ranking, the University of Texas at Austin proves it makes just as much impact as Fortune 500 players. The university employs more than 20,000 employees, and many of those are student workers. Employees work in various fields and capacities, including janitorial, cafeteria, research, marketing, and many more.
