Although Mossberg is American, its founder was actually an immigrant. Oscar Frederick Mossberg emigrated from Sweden in 1886 and started the family business in 1919 with his two sons, Iver and Harold.

Family was important to the elder Mossberg, so he made it a point to keep the business in the family, a fact that is not lost amongst firearm enthusiasts. Mossberg-gunparts.com explains, “Started as a family business, they continue today as a family business after passing through the hands of sons and grandsons into the hands of the present generation.”

Initially, Mossberg worked for another renowned firearm pioneer, Iver Johnson of Norway. Johnson was best recognized for his revolvers, but according to Mossberg-gunparts.com, it was Mossberg who helped expand Johnson’s inventory by designing other types of guns. “During his tenure with Iver Johnson he designed shotguns, rifles and pistols that were manufactured and marketed under the Iver Johnson brand.”

When Mossberg started his business, he opened up shop in Connecticut and stayed there ever since. Although they’ve recently relocated aspects of the business to Texas, Connecticut still serves as its main hub of production. The County Times notes, “Its North Haven site manufactures more pump action shotguns than any other facility in the world.”

It also supplements the local economy, “employing 270 people in its firearm manufacturing plant on Grasso Avenue.”

Over time, Mossberg rode the popularity of its classic shotgun model to prominence and became the largest shotgun producer in the world. According to Forbes, it’s the largest American shotgun manufacturer and produces the most pump–action shotguns in the world.

Militaries all over the globe equip their soldiers with Mossberg shotguns. According to ArmedForcesMuseum.com,Bermuda, Iceland, and Netherlands, to name of few, supply their armed forces and law-enforcement agencies with Mossberg shotguns.

It's not just an international trend, as the United States has been using the shotgun for awhile. ArmedForcesMuseum.com says, “Currently, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army are known to use the Mossberg Model 590 A1 Shotgun.”

Mossberg has also frequently been recognized as innovators, winning the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) “Innovator of the Year” award twice since 2012.

Some of their most notable innovations were so popular with the public that they sparked the entire firearms industry to adopt their ideas. According to Mossberg.com, these include “include Monte Carlo style stocks, molded trigger housings, spring-loaded, quick release swivels, the first 3 1/2-inch chambered, 12-gauge shotgun ever developed and manufactured, and the first long gun manufacturer to be ISO 9001 certified.”

This impressive set of facts have helped make Mossberg an enduring force in the firearm industry.
