Girls With Guns: Bad Shooting Habits for Women to Avoid

By    |   Tuesday, 31 March 2015 04:52 PM EDT

It is much easier for girls with guns to learn good shooting habits right from the start, rather than have to unlearn bad habits.

Unfortunately, when a new, impressionable shooter is first learning to shoot, it is sometimes not with a qualified instructor. This can lead to a multitude of bad habits and unsafe shooting.

Not knowing which eye is your dominant eye can truly affect your shooting confidence. If you have no idea which eye you are looking at your sights with, your shots will never go where you have intended. The Dominant Eye Exercise is one of the first things a qualified firearms instructor will help you figure out.

An improper grip such as tea-cupping or crossing your thumbs on a semi automatic pistol can result in an poor recoil management or even an injury known as a "slide-bite," which results in a chunk of skin being pinched off by the slide. Shooters typically only make that mistake once, because it's so painful.

Having a poor shooting stance can affect your accuracy because you create instability, become tired faster and you will not be properly squared to the target. Girls with guns who are newer shooters have a tendency to lean backwards, likely fearing the recoil from the gun.

This could become a dangerous mistake, because the target may not always be a paper target. It could very well be an assailant. There are two recognized proper shooting positions for pistols. These are the Isosceles and Weaver stances.

Just as in the swing of a tennis racket, you must also practice follow through when shooting. This ensures that all of the basic shooting fundamentals have been maintained until just after the shot has hit the target. This, in turn, will make you a better, more accurate shooter.
