Global Warming Money: Millions Given to Clean Energy Innovation

By    |   Monday, 27 October 2014 05:43 PM EDT

While the debate rages on about whether or not global warming is fake, if humans caused it, and what should happen next, the federal government is dishing out dollars to businesses working to produce “clean energy.”

President Obama’s plan to reduce Green House Gas emissions is turning into one way people can profit from global warming. The Obama administration wants to reduce GHG emissions in the U.S. by 17 percent in the next five years and by 83 percent by the year 2050.

As a part of this Climate Action Plan, the Energy department is charged with supporting what it calls “clean energy innovation.” That means increased spending for Clean Energy Technologies and an opportunity for some people to cash in on government funding. In 2014 that amount came to $7.9 billion, an increase in spending of $1.9 billion since 2013.

One example of this spending is the Sunshot Incubator program. The Energy Department awards grants for research and startup money for small businesses in this program as a part of a mission to build ideas and get them to market quickly.

In the last seven years, the program claims a huge return on government investment of funds, bringing in nearly $18 in private sector support for every $1 of federal support.

On October 22, 2014, SunShot awarded more than $14 million to small businesses and a similar amount to 10 research institutions.
