Global Warming Movies: 5 Feature Films With Hidden Climate Change Message

By    |   Monday, 17 November 2014 09:15 PM EST

Hollywood has produced many documentaries that openly warn about climate change and global warming, but sometimes the message is subtlety embedded within the plotline of a fictional feature film.

ALERT: Is Global Warming a Hoax? Vote Now

Here are five major movies that contain hidden climate change messages:

1. “Waterworld” (1995) features a post-apocalyptic world covered by water due to the melting of the polar ice caps. This results in some humans mutating into growing fins and gills to adapt to their new environment. It is one of the earliest of the modern films to take on the subject of global warming.

2. “The Day After Tomorrow” (2004) illustrates the destruction of the planet following the rapid effects of global warming. The film won a BAFTA film award for special visual effects and an MTV movie award.

3. “2012” (2009) is a disaster epic in which the earth destroys itself thanks to persistent environmental damage. Survivors go on the run seeking a “mythical” ship to safety.

4. “Snowpiercer” (2013) envisions what happens when a failed global warming experiment kills off life on earth. The survivors live aboard a train called the Snowpiercer, which perpetually traverses the planet.

5. “Interstellar” (2014) is being touted as a “cli-fi,” a new genre of movies that focus on climate change and global warming issues. The film is the story of time/space travelers who must seek out fertile land for crops after climate change destroys earth’s agriculture.
