Are Golf Lessons Necessary?

By    |   Tuesday, 24 July 2018 01:07 PM EDT

If you’re wondering if golf lessons are necessary, it could depend on how you approach the game. You don’t have to take golf lessons, but many golf pros and aces say you should.

It would be especially important for beginners. Spending a bit of money on golf lessons would only add a little more to the cost of clubs, clothes, and the normal green fees, points out Brent Kelley at ThoughtCo.

You could improve your game by learning on your own, and some people might just enjoy playing along with partners who give them tips. Improvements in the game, however, will come about more quickly when learning how to play the right way.

Lessons, which may last from 30 minutes to an hour, could range in price from $25 to $100 per session, depending on the golf teacher or facility. You could also take courses at a local community college or university that is less expensive, but those often consist of a class setting and not a one-on-one situation.

Both newcomers and regulars benefit from private lessons, group lessons, and clinics offered by professionals through the PGA. Although private lessons allow for detailed information on an individual basis, groups and clinics allow people to mingle with others and talk about their game for further improvement.

The PGA notes that taking golf lessons helps everyone play better golf, no matter what level of experience. Students improve their skills, know how to choose the best equipment for them, and even hit the ball longer with accuracy.

Taking golf lessons once in a while is good for the experienced golfer, writes Jon Sherman for Practical Golf. He’s taken more than 40 golf lessons from several different instructors during the more than 20 years he’s been playing. Each session provided him with new ways to improve his game.

A newbie to the game has to learn the basics, but even the seasoned golfer could lose control for some reason and needs advice on getting back on the right track. In just about every sport, an athlete may fall into a slump. So picking up golf lessons again just restores confidence. Sherman adds that if you’re sick, you go to a doctor; it’s the same remedy for a sick golf game.
