Green Coffee Extract Benefits for Weight Loss Still Being Determined

By    |   Thursday, 19 March 2015 08:50 PM EDT

Green coffee bean extract is gaining a reputation for aiding in weight loss, but more studies are needed before any substantial claims can be made about its benefits.

According to Authority Nutrition,  green coffee bean extract is "among the world's most popular weight loss supplements." The advantage of the green coffee bean over roasted coffee beans is a higher level of chlorogenic acid, which has been linked to a number of health benefits.

Exciting Discovery: Ancient Herb Offers Natural Thyroid Support

Scientific studies regarding green coffee bean extract have been primarily conducted on animals. The few studies that have been conducted on humans have been sponsored by the manufacturers and have had small numbers of participants. Authority Nutrition reports the supplement's effectiveness for weight loss is promising, but as dietician Joe Leech tells the website, "Larger and longer-term trials are needed before any firm recommendations can be made."

Chlorogenic acid, found at high levels in green coffee bean extract, is known to be a "polyphenol antioxidant that researchers speculate may promote weight loss by reducing the absorption of fat and glucose in the gut, and lowering insulin levels to improve metabolic function," according to Today Health.

Exciting Discovery: Effective Nutrient Formulation Surprises Scientists

A 2011 study in the journal of Gastroenterology Research and Practice found green coffee extract to lower body weight more significantly than the placebo group in three studies. Although the average weight loss was moderate, researchers noted the poor quality of the studies and suggested more "rigorous trials."

Despite controversy, many dieticians and nutritionists point to growing scientific evidence that the green coffee extract can play an important role in overall health, as well as weight loss. Today's Dietitian reported the supplement can potentially help prevent type 2 diabetes in addition to promoting weight loss. One of the problems is that little of the research focuses on the correct dosages and manufacturer recommendations vary greatly.
