The gun control debate is a hot issue, and arguing it can be a tiring exercise. But firearms advocates can win gun control arguments easily by knowing the right talking points.

Here are four ways firearms advocates can win the gun control debate.

1. Guns inhibit crime — Gun control arguments often start off with the belief that outlawing guns would drastically reduce crime. This just isn’t true.

Almost all handguns are outlawed from private citizen use in the U.K. Since the ban went into effect in 1996, violent crime rates have risen almost every year. A disarmed populace is easy prey for criminals.

2. Constitution guarantees guns — The Second Amendment of the Constitution clearly states that private citizens are entitled to keep and bear arms for their use. Any argument to the contrary can be construed as incorrect and misinformed, as it goes against what’s been the law of the land since the 1780s.

3. Protection of family — Many gun owners carry concealed weapons in order to protect themselves and their family. Most gun owners never wish to have to use their weapons, but enjoy the peace of mind they bring.

4. Providing food — Advocates for gun control are often people who live in big cities, with almost no idea on how the meat they eat gets on their table. Those Americans who do hunt for their food regularly know how valuable guns are, and without them, a lot of Americans would have drastically different and unhealthier diets. Discussing hunting for food to provide for a family is a great way to gain an edge in a gun control debate.

Anti-gun sentiments may always exist, but hopefully these points can help inform the anti-gun crowd why gun owners really need, and deserve, their firearms.
