More than 12 percent of Alabama's adult residents carry concealed guns, and that might be the reason for the proliferation of firearms and pistol ranges throughout the state.
Here are eight ranges to consider if you’re looking for a place in Alabama to practice your gun skills:
1. Big Al's Gun Range: Located in Logan, this new range was the first in the area in mid-2014 to offer a large-caliber indoor shooting range,
according to The Herald Journal. "Shooters send their rounds into hardened AR-50 steel that is angled to safely route spent bullets into a trap, where they fall into collection buckets." In addition, "A state of the art filtration system moves air (and lead dust) away from shooters and expels it through exhaust fans equipped with HEPA filters."

2. Hoover Tactical Firearms offers 52,000 square feet for gun owners to practice their skills. Part of that space goes to a show room, while the remainder contains 12 pistol lanes, eight rifle lanes and includes a live-fire simulation shooting chamber. In March, the facility will have its grand opening for an indoor archery range. On its Facebook page, over 400 reviews gave this business a 4.3 out of 5.0, although customer service seems to be an issue sometimes, based on those reviews. High marks go to the shooting range.
3. Blue and Gray Rifle and Pistol Club: This club is one of the older shooting clubs in the state of Alabama. Located in Huntsville, it was founded in 1961 and a private range open only to club members, who must be members of the NRA, quickly followed. According to their website, the range developed in 2006 is called "the most complete private rifle and pistol range in north Alabama." The club has about 300 members.
4. Lower Wetumpka Shotgun Sports Club: This newer club specializes in helping hunters warm up for the season with a variety of clay shooting targets and ranges. "Shooters normally walk or ride along a designated path from station to station in open fields and hardwood gaps," according to their website. "Each station uses clay targets to simulate any animal such as dove, duck, woodcock, or even a bouncing rabbit."
5. Selwood Farm Sporting Clays & Hunting Preserve: This range received a five-star rating from the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Located in Alpine, the property the range is on has been in the Dell and Carolyn Hill family since 1948. The state's first sporting clay course was opened at Selwood in 1990.

6. AC Outdoor Park: Located in Seale, visitors to this park can not only take advantage of provided equipment to shoot pistols, shotguns, rifles, and bows, but they can also go mudding and camping. A sporting clays course, 350-yard-long rifle range with swinging targets and stands, and four pistol bays offer variety for shooters.
7. Sand Mountain Shooter's Club: Located in Boaz in the Appalachian Mountains, this range considers itself a tourist attraction and is said to be one of the top 10 destinations in the Sand Mountain area. Non-members visiting the area must call ahead to book a shooting range, although ranges are open to non-members every Saturday. In addition to ranges for rifles, handguns and shotguns, the club offers gun-smithing services, a paintball range and an on-site Italian restaurant.
8. Talladega Marksmanship Park: This $20 million isn't even open yet, but it's expected to be one of the top ranges in the state. Under construction and scheduled to open in March 2015,
AL.com reported, "The centerpiece of the project is a fully electronic scoring system on a rifle range features yardage positions at 200-300-600 yards on a terraced site. A newly developed target system is being testing right now at the CMP headquarters in Anniston for use at the new facility ... A 100 yard multi-use range will be available to site in rifles and pistols before moving to the longer ranges."
