Gun Ranges in Maryland: 6 Spots for Firearms and Pistol Practice

By    |   Monday, 23 February 2015 11:32 PM EST

Maryland ranks number 44 in a 2014 list of the best states for gun owners compiled by Guns and Ammo. The state's score of 19 out of 50 is affected by its state constitution which does not guarantee the right to keep and bear arms. Scores were compiled based on right to carry laws, restrictions on sporting rifles, National Firearms Act rights, the Castle Doctrine and a miscellaneous category.

Here are six spots for firearms and pistol practice in Maryland:

1. Freestate Gun Range: Located in Middle River, this indoor facility features 12 state-of-the-art electronic shooting lanes, hourly rates or annual memberships and discounted rates for active duty military, police and fire personnel. Instruction includes basic safety and concealed carry, pistol marksmanship, shooting under pressure and simulated live fire home defense.

"Freestate is the gun range, shop, and school offering the kind of positive environment through which any person can become familiar with guns in a fun and upbeat way," writes a reviewer on Yelp.

2. Maryland Small Arms Range: Located in Upper Marlboro, this facility provides ten 50-yard rifle lanes and fourteen 25-yard pistol lanes. MSAR offers birthday, bachelor, holiday and corporate party packages, firearm instruction and a large supply of firearm accessories, duty gear, and self-defense equipment.

"This new location is only a short distance from their previous, but comes with major improvements … Because the entire facility is divided into smaller sections with limited amount of lanes in each section, the noise level is minimal. Additionally, they now have digital yardage control panels," writes a reviewer on Yelp.

3. Gilbert Indoor Range: Located in Rockville, this facility provides 25 handgun and rifle lanes as well as a shooting simulator, which provides "a highly realistic video-based environment for all aspects of firearms handling including marksmanship, decision-making and tactical strategies, over 300 different scenarios." Instruction includes beginner, intermediate and advanced classes and GIR rents secure vault space for firearm storage.

"Awesome people who know their business and genuinely care about their customers. Very knowledgeable and approachable. Great selection of rentals on site. They treat veterans amazingly well! Good place, good people," writes a reviewer on Facebook.

4. On Target: Located in Severn, this indoor facility with a 25-yard gun range also rents over 70 different types of guns. "On Target allows you, the shooter, to explore the world of guns without limits on make, model, and selection."

"I've thought about it and I can't come up with one good reason not to give On Target anything but 5-Stars. Before I purchased a membership, I shot there a few times and I've been back many times since. I honestly can't think of one thing that I could say was negative," writes a reviewer on Google.

5. Horst & McCann: Located in Bel Air, this indoor gun range is a "Newly designed and renovated shooting/retail/educational facility using Meggitt Defense Systems Caswell technology." The range has a full service retail store as well as firearm rentals, instruction and handgun qualification courses. Certain nights of the week, the range offers specials including college night and ladies night.

"My wife and I went there to try out the reflex sight on our 22/45. Everyone was very nice and accommodating. The range officer in particular is a very nice guy. Always willing to help and even pasted our target one time when we went to rent a different gun. Looking forward to going back for some more practice," writes a reviewer on Google.

6. Cresap Rifle Club: Located in Frederick, this outdoor gun range features covered handgun, rifle, and black power firing lanes. Handgun lanes are 10 and 20-yards, rifle lanes are 25, 50 and 100-yards. Basic safety, personal protection, and hunter education instruction is available.

"These guys are top notch class! Took my son there last weekend and we had a BLAST!! Everyone was very helpful and super nice...even though the place was PACKED! Thank you!!!" writes a reviewer on Facebook.
