Gun Ranges in New York: 5 Spots for Firearms and Pistol Practice

By    |   Tuesday, 24 February 2015 01:03 PM EST

New York ranks 50th in a 2014 list of the best states for gun owners compiled by Guns and Ammo. "Ownership of MSRs is tightly regulated in N.Y., and magazine capacities are limited to 10 rounds." New York received a poor score of 6 out of 50 based on right to carry laws, restrictions on sporting rifles, National Firearms Act rights, the Castle Doctrine and a miscellaneous category.

Here are five spots for firearms and pistol practice in the state of New York:

1. West Side Rifle & Pistol Range: This gun range is "the only operation in Manhattan to have both a classroom and shooting range at the same location." All of its instructors are NRA certified.

"You could not ask for a better place to shoot in NYC. The staff is professional and knowledgeable - it's a great place to learn to shoot or just have a fun and different experience," writes a reviewer on Yelp.

2. Calverton Shooting Range: This Eastern Long Island outdoor facility provides a 10-25 yard pistol range, a 50-200 yard rifle range, a seasonal 300-yard range, black powder range and an archery range. No firearm rentals are available and hours of operation are daylight only and weather permitting.

"Hope this place never changes! The last of a dying breed of shooting ranges. The only place where true freedom exists on Long Island is the Calverton range," writes a reviewer on Yelp.

3. Woodhaven Rifle & Pistol Range: Located in Queens, this gun range and authorized firearm dealer stays at "the forefront of ever-changing laws" so that they can best assist their clients. In addition to their Security Guard training School, they offer hunter safety, archery, and pistol instruction classes.

"I recently applied for a pistol license. This is the place to go. Helpful, knowledgeable, and to the point. Piece of cake. They made my application process go smoothly," writes a reviewer on Yelp.

4. Niagara Gun Range: Located in N. Tonawanda, this 50-yard range can handle "any caliber up to but not including .50BMG." The range has eight shooting lanes and a programmable target system. The gun showroom has over 200 firearms on display and rentals are available.

"Great customer service and willing to help out when necessary. I took my pistol permit class here and the instructor as well as the course itself was top notch! The facility is up to date and they have a good selection of products," writes a reviewer on Google.

5. Long Island Shooting Center: Located in Islip, this gun store and range offers a 15-station, 50-yard shooting range with "shooter controlled, dimmable booth lighting." The facility is climate controlled with an oversized ventilation system.

"Took all my friends here today, had an amazing time. Friendly staff, great choice of weaponry. Will definitely go back! 5 stars all the way!" writes a reviewer on Yelp.
