Each gun range will have its own set of rules, and you’re expected to know those rules before you visit. But there are also universal safety tips guidelines that everyone should know in advance of firing a gun at a range.

Here are eight of them, according to the National Rifle Association:

1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. The NRA calls this the most important rule of gun safety. Control where the muzzle or front end of the gun barrel is pointed at all times.

2. DON’T put your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to fire. Instead, rest your finger along the side of the gun or on the trigger guard of the gun until you’re ready to shoot.

3.
NEVER load a gun until you’re ready to use it. When you pick up a gun, be sure the safety device is engaged. If the gun has a magazine, remember to remove it before looking into the chamber.

4. ALWAYS wear eye and ear protection. Your eyes can be damaged by the debris and gases discharged by the gun, and the loud noise of the weapon can damage your hearing.

5. EDUCATE yourself on your gun and how it operates before you use it. It is especially important to be familiar with how the gun’s action works so you can safely remove and load ammunition.

6. ENSURE you have the right ammunition for your weapon. That information will usually be stamped on the gun’s barrel. Ammunition boxes or the ammo cartridge will display identification information you need to ensure compatibility.

7. KNOW your target and what is beyond it. When you’re at a shooting range, be aware of adjacent areas and be sure to only fire at an approved target sheet.

8. MAINTAIN the gun with regular cleaning and proper storage to ensure you can operate it safely. If in doubt, have a gunsmith inspect it.
