Facts About Benelli: History, Locations and Information

By    |   Friday, 01 May 2015 03:15 PM EDT

Firearm manufacturer Benelli is a relatively young company compared to gun manufacturers like Colt, and Smith and Wesson, but since beginning operations in 1967 in Urbino, Italy, it has become a top shotgun and rifle manufacturer.

The Benelli family got their start in the manufacturing industry by making motorcycles, not guns, but were largely unsuccessful at managing either business and sold Benelli Armi, their firearm division, to Beretta in 1983. As a result, Benelli stopped producing handguns, except for competition pistols, to negate competition with its parent company and began focusing on quality shotguns and rifles, many of which use their unique Inertia action system. The efficient system for chambering a new round and re-cocking the pin was invented by Bruno Civolani and kick-started Benelli’s firearm production, according to a Benelli history on GunsForSale.com

“Continuous innovation, research, the development of new technologies and materials, precision engineering and distinctive design are the keystones of Benelli’s philosophy,” the company’s website states.

Approximately 90 percent of the shotguns and rifles they produce are for hunting and competitive shooting with only 10 percent geared toward law enforcement and military. The guns are manufactured by state-of-the-art robotics at the Benelli plant in Urbino, Italy, to ensure every weapon is precise, blemish-free and near perfect, as seen in a photo essay of the factory published by Field and Stream.

According to the website InUrbino.net, the plant produces over 227,000 guns per year – over 2 million since opening their doors. The company considers functionality and aesthetic design simultaneously, creating products with an emphasis on reliability, quality and high performance standards that Benelli is proud to name after Renaissance masters like Leonardo Di Vinci and Raffaello.

United States purchases only account for a third of the company’s sales, but their auto-loading shotguns were second in volume sales in the states in 2013, trumped only by Remington. Some of the other firearms Benelli offers to their clients include pump-action shotguns, most of which are sold to the U.S., tactical shotguns, slug guns, and rifles designed for everything from hunting waterfowl to big game.
