How to Prevent a New Year's Hangover

Tuesday, 28 December 2010 09:43 AM EST

New Year's Eve parties are fun, at least until the next day. A hangover is never fun, no matter what time of year it is. If you plan on bringing the new year in with a party, there are many things you can do to prevent a New Year's Day hangover. Here are a few tips to get you started.hangover prevention techniques tools
  • Drink plenty of water before you plan to drink. When you wake up on New Year's Eve, start drinking water. Consume more than the recommended eight 8 ounce glasses. Water helps to prevent the dehydration that accompanies a hangover. The dehydration is a great deal of what makes you feel bad.
  • Eat starchy foods throughout the day before you start drinking. Foods that are starchy tend to stay in your system longer.  Pasta, brown rice, and foods of this nature prevent fluctuations in your blood sugar level. They also slow the absorption of alcohol.
  • Don't start drinking too early. If you do, your hangover will be much worse. Save the alcohol for the party itself. When drinking, try to put some food into your stomach also. Alternating glasses of water with alcoholic drinks will also help to stave off a hangover.
  • Ask for more ice in your drinks. This will help to keep the alcohol level down and you won't dehydrate as quickly either. Try to nurse your drinks as this gives the ice more time to melt and water your drink down.
  • Don't mix liquors. This does not mean you have to stick to the same drink all night. If you choose to drink vodka, many drinks can be made using the liquor. Change up the drinks you choose, but stick with the liquor.
  • Fatty foods can help to slow the body's absorption of alcohol. Try to snack on foods at the party that are high in fat. Sugary foods are good also as they help the body get rid of alcohol faster.
Although you may not wake up feeling like you are ready to take on the world using these techniques, you will feel much better than if you did nothing. Try them. Not only will you be able to party longer, you won't be sick the following morning.
