Herman Cain is no stranger to adversity, or overcoming it, as he has shown in his personal life. The potential GOP 2016 presidential hopeful plans to showcase the skills, experiences, and lessons that he has learned in life as a successful, hard-working businessman.

Here are eight facts about the personal life of Herman Cain:

1. Cain was born in a poor, working family near Atlanta, Georgia on Dec. 13, 1945. His father worked several jobs and his mother worked as a domestic, according to Biography.com.

2. Cain, who credited his parents with teaching him the importance of education, earned two degrees. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Morehouse College in 1967, then later earned a master’s degree in computer science from Purdue University

while working full-time for the U.S. Navy.

3. After earning his degrees, Herman worked his way up the corporate ladder as a systems analyst at Coca-Cola and eventually as a vice president of systems and services at Pillsbury. He moved on to the latter’s Burger King division, where he moved into a regional vice president that excelled at transforming his region’s performance and profitability.

4. Cain’s prior experience and results were recognized in 1986, when he was offered the position of president of the failing Godfather’s Pizza. Cain led a remarkable turnaround of the pizza chain within a 14-month period. He later purchased the chain with other investors.

5. In 1994, Cain made international headlines when he publicly challenged then-President Bill Clinton regarding his national health care plan, arguing that it would be extremely expensive and harmful for small businesses.

6. Cain was appointed chairman of the National Restaurant Association of America in 1994 and worked as its CEO from 1996 to 1999.

7. Serving as a political advisor to the Bob Dole/Jack Kemp ticket in 1996, Cain gained experience and exposure to politics and the electoral process.

8. Cain has since had two unsuccessful runs for public office. He ran for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia in 2004, and he also ran unsuccessfully in the presidential election of 2012. The resilient candidate is not ready to back down yet, hinting he may throw his hat in the ring for the 2016 GOP nomination for president, according to The Washington Post.
