Hunting in South Dakota: Are Safety Courses Required to Hunt in South Dakota? How Do I Pass Classes?

By    |   Thursday, 04 June 2015 11:10 AM EDT

Hunting in South Dakota is very popular with both residents and non-residents alike. The state makes it fairly easy to apply for and receive a hunting license, but it does require prerequisite courses before hunters are permitted to buy a hunting license.

These courses generally cover topics like safety, compliance with rules and regulations, and hunting skills.

Before receiving a hunting license in South Dakota, prospective hunters must take HuntSAFE or National Bowhunter Education Foundation (NBEF) classes, depending on which criteria the hunter meets.

According to the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks website, the state requires that hunters complete the NBEF safety course if they are 12- to 15-years-old and “will be purchasing a big game archery license.”

The requirement also applies to “any first time big game archery licensee regardless of age,” and to those receiving an archery elk license. The hunters also must have a valid hunter safety certificate.

The HuntSAFE courses are designed for those who want to hunt who are between the ages of 12 and 15. Once the course is completed, the minor is able to purchase a hunting license with the help of a parent or legal guardian. “Until the student is 16, a parent or guardian must present the HuntSAFE certification card to a license vendor when purchasing the young person's hunting license.”

Neither of the courses is particularly intensive, but it is important to know how to pass them. To pass the HuntSAFE course, the student must not miss a class, must pass a written test, and demonstrate firearm safety knowledge. Students are evaluated on their skill level, attentiveness and attitude throughout the course.

Bowhunter classes are offered both online and in a classroom. This course is geared to teaching the student each chapter of the bowhunter study guide and preparing him or her for the final exam required for completion.

To pass the final exam, students must know the material in each section of the course study guide.
