By    |   Friday, 07 October 2016 11:29 AM EDT

Natural supplements may help in the treatment of hypertension, also called high blood pressure, when used with other methods approved by a doctor.

Diet, exercise, and medication are often included in treating the condition. Patients need to discuss the use of supplements for hypertension with their doctor because some supplements may interact with medication, resulting in dangerous side effects.

• Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish and fish oil supplements, have been known to lower heart disease risks and may lower high blood pressure, says the Mayo Clinic.

• Fiber supplements to treat hypertension include blond psyllium and wheat bran.

• Research shows folic acid helps reduce levels of an amino acid that damages arterial walls and may be beneficial for hypertension, according to Everyday Health.

• Supplements that include calcium, magnesium, and potassium might be helpful in lowering high blood pressure. Too-low levels of calcium and magnesium have been linked to high blood pressure, says Dr. Andrew Weil, who specializes in holistic health and integrative medicine.

• Vitamin C contains antioxidants that may lower blood pressure for patients with mild or moderate hypertension.

• Studies show garlic may have some beneficial effects against high blood pressure, but researchers say more study is needed.

• Some supplements, such as coenzyme Q10 or L-arginine, may widen blood vessels for improved blood pressure. Coenzyme Q10 supplements have been found to naturally lower blood pressure, according to Dr. Jules Whitaker, director of the Whitaker Wellness Institute.

• Olive oil, also known for its heart-healthy benefits, may boost the immune system and lower blood pressure. Whitaker recommends Benolea, an olive leaf extract that has been shown to help expand blood vessels.

• Grape seed extract contains powerful polyphenols that lower blood pressure for people with hypertension.

• Hawthorn has anti-inflammatory properties that may treat hypertension. Inflammation in the walls of arteries can constrict blood vessels to cause high blood pressure, says Dr. Paul Kalnins, assistant professor at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. “The compounds in hawthorn can help relax those arterial walls,” he told Everyday Health.
