Hyperthyroidism is a fairly common condition in which the thyroid gland produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormones in the blood.
Experts and pharmaceutical companies are trying to research and manufacture hyperthyroidism drugs that can help reduce the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism drug treatment involves the basic idea that the thyroid glands are expected to produce the body’s requirement of T3 and T4 hormones. Hyperthyroidism causes the thyroid gland to produce excessive amounts of any or both of these hormones. Thus, hyperthyroidism drug treatment will involve medication that reduces the excessive production of these hormones.
One of the most common medications prescribed as treatment for hyperthyroidism is a drug called Beta Blockers. The beta blockers act on the affected area very quickly and give instant relief from the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Beta blockers help reduce rapid heartbeat, tremors, and nervousness which are all common symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Most commonly used beta blokers are Propranolol and Metoprolol.
Antithyroid drugs are also used for hypothyroid treatment. They help reduce the effects of hyperthyroidism by blocking the way the thyroid gland makes thyroid hormones by using iodine. A few important hyperthyroidism drugs are Methimazole (Tapazole) and Propylthiouracil (PTU).
These help the body to recover from hyperthyroidism by inhibiting the formation and coupling of iodotyrosines in thyroglobulin. Propylthiouracil is also another drug that inhibits the conversion to more active forms of thyroid hormone.
When diagnosing hyperthyroidism, doctors ensure that the patient is not allergic to its use as it causes rashes and liver failure. Even the use of Antithyroid drugs as a hyperthyroidism drug treatment lowers the number of white blood cells in the body. This drops the resistance of the body to infection.
5. Another common and effective drug that is being used as a treatment for hyperthyroidism is radioactive iodine-131. This provides quick and permanent relief by collecting radioactive iodine. As the thyroid gland collects iodine and produces thyroid hormone, the radioactive iodine produced due to the effects of this drug destroys the cells that make up the thyroid gland. Radioactive iodine-131 has been increasingly used as a treatment for hyperthyroidism as it does not have any side effects like the antithyroid drugs. This is because the radioactive iodine-131 acts only on the affected tissues in the body.
Surgeons and physicians rely more on thyroid surgery, yet drug treatment for hyperthyroidism has also come up as an important area of activity. Research is being conducted to produce more hyperthyroidism drugs that can be added towards the hyperthyroid drug treatment.
