8 Best Military Discounts for Veterans

Business owners and employers appreciate the service veterans provide for the country, and they want to thank them with generous military discounts. Many of the savings are also available to the families of vets.

There are countless stores and services that provide discounts. Some of them are well-known, but veterans can also ask any establishment about possible military savings. Remember to bring along a military ID, and to check online or at the stores.

Here are eight of the best military discounts for veterans:

1. Auto purchases — Many auto dealers provide up to $500 discounts on the purchase of vehicles. This includes many of the top manufacturers like Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia. Ask local dealers about discounts. Auto care and parts dealers, such as Advance Auto Parts and Jiffy Lube, offer 10-percent discounts, according to the American Legion.

2. Banking services — Veterans can receive discounts on credit, checking, and savings accounts at various financial institutions. Chase Bank, for example, offers premium accounts on checking and savings for free. American Express waives all fees for active duty military.

3. Electronics — Find discounts on computers, phones, and other accessories at some of the best stores. Companies include Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Best Buy, Sprint, and AT&T.

4. Education — Earn degrees from military-friendly colleges, computer training, music schools, and other facilities with discounts on tuition. California Southern University has 10-percent discounts for vets and their families, Military Benefits notes. Berklee School of Music offers 20-percent tuition fee discounts. Families can also receive 10-percent discounts for online high school and middle school programs at Keystone School.

5. Clothing and shoes — Savings for veterans can range from 10 to 20 percent or more. Allen Edmonds offers 25-percent discounts on merchandise. Bates Footwear offers nearly half off on shoes for vets and dependents.

6. Restaurants — Veterans get discounts of up to 20 percent at some of the best chains, according to Care.com. Some eateries, such as Applebee’s and Subway, have free giveaway promotions for vets. Others with discounts include IHOP, Longhorn Steakhouse, Wendy’s, Golden Corral, Chick-fil-A, and many more.

7. Home improvement — Get the materials you need for home repairs and receive savings at checkout. Home improvement giants Home Depot and Lowe’s have 10- to 15-percent discounts for vets.

8. Travel — The best car rental agencies, from Alamo and Avis to Hertz and Budget, offer up to 20-percent discounts on rates. Amtrak has a Veterans Advantage program with 15-percent savings. There are also discounts for vets at hotels and cruise lines.
