Naproxen is the generic name for Anaprox, Naprosyn, Naprelan, and Aleve. The drug class in which these medications are place are called NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). They are used for the reduction of pain, inflammation, and fever in mild to moderate cases. Aleve is the non-prescription derivative of this type of medication and can be found over-the-counter and is used much like aspirin or Ibuprofen medications for pain.
Most people can take this pain reliever without experiencing any problems. However, there are still some symptoms that can arise from Naproxen and other medications with its makeup that you should know about before taking it.
Possible side effects can include the following:
- Gastrointestinal issues like constipation, nausea, heartburn, or diarrhea
- Drowsiness or tiredness (do not drive or operate heavy machinery)
- Headache or dizziness (if you experience dizzy spells with this drug do not drive or use any kind of heavy machinery)
If you experience any of these symptoms while you are taking this medication, especially if they worsen or become persistent, tell your pharmacist or doctor immediately.
Serious side effects that rarely occur can include the following:
- Edema (swelling) of the hands and/or feet
- Painful or difficulty swallowing
- Stomach pain (which can be a sign of stomach bleeding)
- Mood swings or changes (like depression)
- Vision changes (such as blurred vision)
- Hearing changes (including tinnitus)
- Rapid heart beat
- Fainting
- Severe or persistent headaches
- Unexplained and/or sudden weight gain.
- Sun sensitivity
Some things you need to address before taking Naproxen include telling your doctor if you have ever had liver or kidney disease, digestive problems, heart conditions, stroke, high blood pressure, fluid retention (swelling), anemia or other blood disorders, dehydration, nasal polyps, asthma, diabetes, or any other medical condition or if you are pregnant or nursing.
It is wise to tell your doctor about any medications you are currently taking as there are drug interactions that can occur when taking this medication. You should also tell your pharmacist about your medical history and medications and ask for a list of side effects, drug interactions, and other precautions.
Overdose can occur with this medication. Signs of overdose include vomit that has the appearance of coffee grounds, extreme stomach pain, seizures, or shallow breathing.
When taken as directed, Naproxen does not typically cause any serious side effects in most healthy people.
