Doctors in the field of alternative medicine often recommend taking certain natural health supplements to boost memory. Memory loss can occur simply from the process of aging, from a stressful lifestyle or from Alzheimer's disease.
According to a report in Progressive Health, "While conventional prescription drugs may temporarily enhance memory, they come with a number of side effects and their benefits are only short-lived. In contrast, natural supplements do not work instantly; in fact, these supplements are only beneficial with long-term therapy. However, they are safer, effective and well-tolerated."

While most researchers agree that additional study on the benefits of natural health supplements and memory is needed, some supplements show great promise and have become consumer favorites.
1. Ginkgo biloba: According to NYU Langone Medical Center, "An extract made from the herb Ginkgo biloba is a well-established herbal treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Ginkgo may also be helpful for improving normal age-related memory loss, and even for enhancing mental function in younger people."
2. CoQ10: This enzyme produced in the body is necessary for the production of energy in cells, including mental energy.
According to Life Extension, CoQ10 preserves brain structure and slows neurodegeneration. "CoQ10 shows great promise in laboratory and animal studies of Alzheimer's disease. By slowing oxidant damage, CoQ10 is proven to reduce deposition of destructive amyloid [beta] peptide proteins in brain cells."

3. Bacopa monnieri: This herb from India has been shown to be effective in increased learning, concentration, and memory.
One 2010 study published by the National Institutes of Health performed neuropsychologic and subjective memory tests on subjects involved in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Those who received Bacopa had "significantly improved memory acquisition and retention."
4. Acetyl L Carnitine: According to Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D., "Because L-carnitine is involved in cellular metabolism, acetyl-L-carnitine can help increase energy production in the mitochondria, the "power plants" of all cells, and thereby may generally boost physical and mental energy. As a dietary supplement, acetyl-L-carnitine is often used to help improve memory, and has been studied as a possible adjunct treatment for Alzheimer's disease."
5. Choline: This nutrient is a precursor to the chemical acetylcholine. Low levels of acetylcholine are thought to play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease.
According to Reuters, one study indicates, "People who get plenty of choline in their diets may perform better on memory tests, and be less likely to show brain changes associated with dementia."
