There are many ways to improve the quality of life for those living with arthritis and joint pain, and several of them can be achieved naturally.

Here are five top natural remedies for arthritis and joint pain.

1. Lose weight. Research shows even moderate weight loss can benefit arthritis patients, according to Health.com. How significant is a little? Laura Robbins, a senior vice president of education and academic affairs at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, told Health.com that "every pound you pare off means 4 pounds less pressure on your knees."

2. Exercise more. Contrary to popular belief, most exercise does not exacerbate arthritis but actually helps the condition, according to Health.com. From swimming, which relieves pressure on joints, to simply walking, exercise is beneficial for mobility. Exercise regimens should include both "aerobic exercise — like walking, swimming, or biking — and strengthening exercises, such as isometric and isotonic exercises," Dr. Roy Altman, at the University of California, Los Angeles, told Health.com.

3. Take supplements. Studies have show certain kinds of glucosamine can alleviate arthritis joint pain, and chondroitin helps slow its progression, according to Health.com. Scientists are still studying other natural products that may improve arthritis symptoms.

4. Make a mustard seed plaster. To soothe aching joints, a mustard seed plaster may help, according to Everyday Health. There are many variations of recipes, but it involves turning mustard seed oil into a paste, which can then be applied to the limbs where the mixture's warmth helps draw blood flow to painful areas. Use caution, though, as it can burn the skin. Dr. Sharon Kolasinski, professor of clinical medicine in the division of rheumatology at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia, also told Everyday Health that consuming mustard seed has nutritional benefits as it is filled with selenium, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

5. Try frankincense. Many know the name of this substance from the Bible, and herbalists around the world have used it for centuries. But studies show frankincense can stymie production of molecules in the body that create inflammation and harm cartilage tissue, said Everyday Health, citing a study from Cardiff University in Wales.
