Ocean Acidification, is the term applied to chemical shifts in the planet's oceans caused by C02 emissions. Since the start of the industrial revolution, man-made activities have boosted the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, which in turn significantly affects Earth's oceans, since the oceans absorb about 25 percent of the released CO2 each year.
Is this a bad thing? Like other facets of the global warming/climate change debate, opinions differ on that.

Here are seven quotes from people who don't believe in ocean acidification:
1. "So what's the story here? Are coral reefs really in their last decades of existence? Will the shells of other calcifying marine life also dissolve away during our lifetimes? The NRDC film certainly makes it appear that such is the case; but a little scientific sleuthing reveals nothing of substance in this regard. In fact, even a cursory review of the peer-reviewed scientific literature reveals that an equally strong case — if not a more persuasive one — can be made for the proposition that the ongoing rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration will actually prove a boon to calcifying marine life." - Craig Idso, chairman of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change.
Idso adds, "Sadly, however, the NRDC chose to present an extreme one-sided, propagandized view of ocean acidification; and in this critique we present the part of the story that they clearly don't want you to know."
2. "When the slight global warming that occurred between 1970-2000 came to a virtual standstill, the doomsayers adopted 'climate change' which apparently means that all extreme weather events are caused by human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2)," wrote noted climate change denier Dr. Patrick Moore, the Chair of Ecology, Energy, and Prosperity with the Frontier Centre for Public Policy.
Dr. Moore added, "Cold, hot, wet, dry, wind, snow, and large hailstones are attributed to humanity's profligate use of fossil fuels. But the pause in global warming kept on and became embarrassing around 2005. Something dire was needed to prop up the climate disruption narrative. 'Ocean acidification' was invented to provide yet another apocalyptic scenario, only this one required no warming or severe weather, only more CO2 in the atmosphere."
3. "People are beginning, cautiously, to dial back 21st century warming because there has been none. Because dreaded sea-level rise is also proportional, those estimates are going to have to come down, too. One of these years, the upcoming end of the world from global warming is going to be officially canceled, to be replaced by a new apocalypse, which I predict will be called "acid oceans," or something like that." - Dr. Patrick Michaels, Director of the Center for the Study of Science, Cato Institute,
wrote in a January 2013 opinion piece for The Orange County Register.

4. "The bottom line on pH measurement is that to pretend there is an accurate long-term record of pH over the oceans — or that a single reading from Hawaii or anywhere else is typical of all oceans — is nonsense. The simple answer is we don't know. But what we do know is that in the past, creatures in the ocean have survived and thrived under conditions that were less alkaline than those existing right now." - Lawrence Livermore National Labs materials engineer
Jack Dini, wrote in 2010 in a piece for the Hawaii Reporter.
5. "Climate has always changed. It always has and always will. Sea level has always changed. Ice sheets come and go. Life always changes. Extinctions of life are normal. Planet Earth is dynamic and evolving. Climate changes are cyclical and random. Through the eyes of a geologist, I would be really concerned if there were no change to Earth over time. In the light of large rapid natural climate changes, just how much do humans really change climate?" - Australian geologist Ian Plimer, in the introduction to his book, "Heaven and Earth."
6. "The more acidic the water, the higher biological productivity becomes, and the denser the amount of life. In the sea this is borne out by the observed fact that highly productive upwelling areas are more acidic. In other words, acidic seas are a good thing." - Dr. J. Floor Anthoni,
in a post for a New Zealand organization called, "Seafriends," which bills itself as a way to "discover what it takes to save the sea, the environment, the world."
7. "First, they called it "global warming." Then they noticed there had been no warming for 15 years, and cooling for 9, so they hastily renamed it 'climate change.' Then they noticed the climate was changing no more than it ever had, so they tried 'energy security,' and even named a congressional bill after it. Then they noticed that most Western nations already had bountiful energy security, in the form of vast, untapped domestic supplies of oil, gas, coal, or all three, so they switched to "ocean acidification." - Robert Ferguson,
president of the Science and Public Policy Institute (SPPI), an organization that promotes the views of global warming skeptics.
