What Is Passover?

Monday, 18 April 2011 01:22 PM EDT

Passover is an eight-day long celebration lasting from April 15th through the 22nd. The holiday remembers the Israelites escape from slavery in ancient Egypt.

The holiday is divided into two parts. During the first and last two days candles are lit at night and the Kiddush is red. On those days, observers must refrain from working, driving, or using electric devices.
During the middle four days, called chol hamoed, work is permitted.
Throughout the entirety of Passover, leavened bread is forbidden to honor the history of the unleavened bread the Israelties ate when they fled from Egypt. Instead, the bread is replaced with a flat, unleavened bread called matzah.

On the first two nights of Passover, a traditional Seder is held. It includes a fifteen-step tradition and meal. During the Seder, the Haggadah is read. The liturgy depicts the story of the Jewish people’s Exodues from Egypt.
