It can be too easy to forget about the many valorous acts performed by many police officers to rescue dogs and bring their abusers to justice.

Urgent: Should All Police Officers Have to Wear Body Cameras?

Here are 5 stories about dogs who were rescued by police officers:

1. Akron police officers in Ohio rescued four wind-battered and whimpering three-month-old puppies from a cage covered with tarps on three sides that was strapped to the top of a van going 76 mph on Interstate 76. The police issued a warning to the family of six Mennonites who were driving the van and said they had “far more important things to put in the car,” according to NBC News.

2. A Columbian police officer risked his life to save a small dog that fell into a flash-flood filled river and was being smashed against rocks during a mudslide that ravaged the Salgar region and claimed over 78 lives, according to RT News. After he scooped up the pup, the officer performed CPR on it until it began breathing again.

3. Pittsburgh police officers arrested a woman with five charges of animal cruelty after they discovered four dogs that starved to death in her home and rescued the one emaciated pit bull still left alive.

The woman’s neighbors had complained about a foul odor coming from the house, and when the police arrived they discovered that the woman no longer lived there and the dogs hadn’t been fed for almost a week, according to WTAE.com news.

4. Horry County police officers in Ohio rescued 146 dogs from a puppy mill and placed them in an animal shelter for adoption after finding them in deplorable living conditions.

The police charged the woman who owned the puppy mill for her failure to provide them with proper care and treatment, according to NBC4i.com

5. Animal control police and a Hazmat team in Lakewood, New Jersey, rescued approximately 40 dogs from a urine and feces-filled house. Because the front door was blocked by a foot of feces, the teams pulled the filth-covered dogs that had been walking on the rafters of the second story because the floor had deteriorated out of a window, according to Asbury Park Press.
