1. Keep one or more coolers in a safe place in the home and ice on hand to surround food in case the refrigerator or freezer is affected by a long-term power outage, the American Red Cross suggests.

2. Keep a three-day supply of water ready for an evacuation, estimating one gallon per person per day, the Red Cross says, adding that it's best to have a two-week supply of water at home.

3. Store nonperishable foods, such as canned items, in case of a long-term power outage. Don't forget a manual can opener is needed during an electrical failure.

4. Have backup power ready to use if someone in the family is dependent on electrical-powered equipment.

5. A cordless telephone can be used for a time following a power outage.

6. An emergency preparedness kit should include a flashlight, batteries, and first-aid supplies, says Ready.gov, a website for the Department of Homeland Security.

7. Have a battery-powered radio and a supply of extra batteries so you can stay up to date on important news in the event of a power outage.

9. People who have electric garage door openers should learn how to operate the manual release lever.

10. Keeping the car gas tank filled as often as possible allows for safer travel from the home if necessary. This is especially important if someone in the family needs medical attention.

11. Keep family and emergency information somewhere in the home that’s easy to find.

12. A seven-day backup supply of family members' medications is important as you prepare for any sort of emergency situation, the American Red Cross notes.

13. Have enough sanitation and personal care items at hand when preparing for a power outage that may last a long time.

14. Always have extra cash available if there is a widespread power outage that disables ATM machines.
