6 Holistic Remedies for Prostate Cancer

By    |   Friday, 01 April 2016 11:23 AM EDT

Because conventional prostate cancer treatments often come with harsh and unwanted side effects, some men are beginning to look to holistic remedies to both prevent prostate cancer and slow its growth once diagnosed.

These holistic remedies might be useful for prostate cancer, but you are encouraged to discuss them with your physician to determine their role in your complete treatment plan, says WebMD.

Here are six holistic remedies to consider as treatments for prostate cancer:

1. Diet

Many types of cancer, including prostate cancer, are more common in Western countries compared to other areas of the world where the traditional diet includes far less meat consumption and is heavy on fruits and vegetables, says WebMD.

2. Lycopene

Dr. Andrew Weil mentions a study showing that men who consumed tomato sauce at least four times each week were 40 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer.

Lycopene is found in abundance in tomatoes and watermelon.

3. Green tea

According to Weil, one antioxidant found in green tea has been shown to kill cancer cells in a test tube. Another substance in green tea has been shown to block an enzyme that promotes prostate cancer growth.

4. Modified citrus pectin, or MCP

This supplement is recommended by Dr. Julian Whitaker because it can interfere with prostate cancer’s ability to spread to other parts of the body.

He points out that when prostate cancer is confined to the prostate, it is rarely life-threatening.

MCP may also enhance the body’s natural ability to kill cancer cells, and it can flush cancer-causing heavy metals from the body.

5. Pomegranate

WebMD says that animal studies confirm that pomegranate can reduce cancer cell growth, and early studies in humans show promise as well.

Drinking pomegranate juice and eating pomegranate fruits should be incorporated in moderation as part of a healthy cancer diet.

6. Vitamin D

Research is confirming that vitamin D3 is a powerful cancer-fighting agent.

Whitaker recommends having a blood test to measure vitamin D levels and supplementing if necessary.

Besides including these holistic remedies into your prostate cancer prevention and treatment plan, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians recommends avoiding non-organic foods, exposure to pesticides, non-grass-fed meats, hydrogenated oils, sugar, and processed foods.
