Prostate Massage Therapy: How It Works

By    |   Thursday, 07 April 2016 09:31 PM EDT

Prostate massage therapy or prostate milking has been used historically in many cultures to enhance men’s sexual health and performance, says the Prostate.net.

Today, prostate massage therapy is gaining some favor in the medical community as a drug-free treatment for an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and chronic prostatitis.

In a prostate massage, a physician inserts a gloved and lubricated index finger into the man’s rectum and manually locates the prostate gland, explains WebMD. Gentle pressure is applied several times.

According to Prostate.net, a man or his partner can also perform the massage, but a physician should be consulted first to confirm they are a good candidate for prostate massage.

The massage can also be done externally by applying gentle and intermittent pressure along the entire length of the perineum, or area between the scrotum and anus.

According to WebMD, researchers are not certain why prostate massage therapy is helpful, but it is thought to improve circulation in the prostate and open up fluid ducts within. It can also help to enhance the action of antibiotics being administered for prostatitis by improving their penetration into the prostate.

It should only be used for chronic prostatitis. When used for acute inflammation, there is risk for spreading the infection beyond the prostate gland.

The Prostatitis Network warns that only gentle prostate massage should be used. A massage that is too vigorous can cause hemorrhoids and blood poisoning by spreading infection.

If there is cancer in the prostate gland, vigorous massage can actually disturb the cells, break them apart, and increase the risk of the cancer spreading to other parts of the body. Care also needs to be taken not to tear the delicate rectal lining with a fingernail.

Aside from manual prostate massage therapy, men can also use commercially available prostate massage devices, says Prostate.net. Men should research these devices carefully and make sure they are not marketed as “sex toys” but instead as clinical prostate massage aids.
These devices are designed to either be inserted into the anus for an internal massage or they can simply help massage the external perineum depending on preference.
