A red moon, or blood moon, occurs during a lunar eclipse when the moon moves into the Earth’s shadow, so it takes on a reddish hue. The unusual appearance of four red moons within an 18-month period indicates a biblical Red Moon Rapture, according to some Christians who believe in the coming end times.
There are usually about two lunar eclipses a year, but between 2014 and 2015 four red moons appear — April 15 and Oct. 8, 2014, and April 4 and Sept. 28, 2015.

Believers in this crucial sign of the last days point to Joel 2:31 in the Bible: “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord.”
Four red moons in this short period are referred to as a tetrad, according to astronomers.
Although NASA reports eight sets of tetrads will appear before the year 2100, many Christians believe current appearances signal the beginning of turbulent events with the Rapture, when true Christians are miraculously lifted into heaven; the battle of Armageddon; and the return of Jesus Christ.
Believers in the Red Moon Rapture note that
all four red moons occur during Jewish holidays. Israel will play a vital role in the last days, a connection that occurred during previous tetrads, they say.
Four total eclipses centered around the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1493-94 following Columbus’ voyage to America. No tetrads occurred for 300 years between 1600 and 1900, according to Fred Espenak, an eclipse expert at NASA.

A tetrad happened in 1949-50 after the establishment of Israel and during the first Arab-Israeli war. Another four total lunar eclipses in 1967-68 appeared during the time of Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War.
The Red Moon Rapture will occur around a series of events, but no one knows exactly when it will come. It will precede the coming of Christ, according to Peter Goodgame, an author and leading advocate of the Red Moon Rapture theory. He believes the appearance of the Antichrist on a public scale will follow the Rapture, perhaps within hours of it.
Some Christians believe the Rapture will occur when the truly faithful, both the dead and the living, undergo a transformation from earthly existence to be with God, followed by seven years of tribulation before Christ’s return. Other Christians believe the Rapture will happen after the seven-year period.
