How to Plan a Retirement Party

Tuesday, 05 October 2010 12:31 PM EDT

It is important that retirement party planning focuses on the person leaving the firm or business. It should highlight their career with the company. Creative thinking can help plan a fun-filled retirement party. Most importantly, when planning a retirement party, organizers should ensure the party helps recall happy memories.

The steps for retirement party planning should include selecting the best retirement party ideas, deciding on a budget, preparing a retirement party invitation list and invitationas and announcements, arranging refreshments, arranging a photographer, and preparing a speech and announcements for the party.

The following are important tips for planning a retirement party:
  • The budget for the retirement party should be reasonable, including a present for the retiree as a nice parting gift. Organizers should keep expenses under control.
  • The venue for the retirement party should be suitable for festive decorations. Displays should highlight the retiree’s achievements and focus on the core theme.
  • The theme for the retirement party should focus on the employee’s character, career, and achievements. It should also emphasize future possibilities, including a fuller family life. Most employees look forward to retirement after years of routine work, and may have already made plans for keeping themselves occupied.
  •  The invitation list can include special guests who have been closely associated with the retiree. A guest list for the retirement party would make a wonderful souvenir along with photographs. Invitees can write down short personal comments about the retiree along with their names and signatures.
  • · The program for the retirement party should be simple. Speeches and announcements at the party should be brief and effective. The coordinator and host should be someone who has a good relationship with the retiree. The host should be able to hold the attention of the audience and control the proceedings of the retirement party.
  •   A toast can be given by a popular superior. The farewell speech for the retirement party can be delivered by an immediate superior or a subordinate. It should rouse positive emotions of appreciation tinged with sadness for the employee’s departure. The toast and the farewell speech can be combined and delivered in the middle or towards the end of the retirement party.
  • Coordinators should come up with innovative retirement party ideas. One or two short, meaningful skits could be included in the program. A short song or poem can be composed in honor of the employee. A display board with pictures of the employee taken throughout their career is a good way to add an emotional touch to the retirement party.
  • ·Fellow employees can be invited to jot down fond memories of working with the retiree. These can be combined and presented along with the farewell gift. A few notes that are humorous or touching can be read at the retirement party. Inspiring anecdotes could also be quoted at the party.
Do everything possible to wrap up the retirement party cheerfully. The retiree should leave happily with fond memories of their coworkers and the organization.
