Rosacea: The Latest Medical Breakthroughs

Tuesday, 01 February 2011 04:38 PM EST

What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammation of cheeks, nose, chin, or eyelids. It is also called acne rosacea. Women between the ages of 20 and 40 are the most common victims of rosacea, though rosacea can also affect men.

Although Rosacea is often confused with acne, the two are entirely different entities. No definite cause of rosacea has been identified. Studies say that people suffering from acne rosacea have an increased number of Demodex mites that produce inflammation on the skin. Even using certain treatments such as micro dermal abrasion to cure acne may cause acne rosacea. Use of topical steroids can also be a common cause of acne rosacea.

Some triggers like stress, anxiety, extreme temperature, smoking, and strenuous exercise increase the blushing tendency of skin, thereby provoking acne rosacea. All these factors damage the small facial capillaries leading to blood leaks in various parts of the face causing Rosacea. In rare cases, Rosacea can even affect the eyes. Rosacae may also show spider-like blood vessels on the cheeks and nose with burning sensations. Patients with Rosacea skin are often mistaken as drunk. Rosacea can cause a lot of emotional and cosmetic stress for the sufferer.

How can Rosacea be cured?
  • Rosacea skin is sensitive to sunlight, so avoiding exposure to sun and using hats with broad brims can help prevent Rosacea.
  • Alcohol and smoking should be curtailed while undergoing Rosacea treatment.
  • Rosacea treatment includes following a strict Rosacea diet. Organic Jojoba or safflower oil is also non-allergic to Rosacea skin. Fish oil supplements may be added in the diet as a Rosacea treatment.
  • Another good Rosacea treatment is the use of a mild face wash.
  • Non-surgical face-lift exercises should be done to treat Rosacea skin.
  • Topical and oral antibiotics are the first line of Rosacea treatment to reduce redness and intensity of flare.
What is Laser Rosacea?
  • Vascular laser therapy has been in use for Rosacea treatment since 1980.
  • Pulse dye laser is a well-known Rosacea laser that corrects dilated blood vessels.
  • KTP laser and Diode laser are newer forms of Rosacea lasers.
  • The CO2 Rosacea laser is used to correct the thickness and shape of nose.
  • Intense Pulsed light is a breakthrough in Rosacea treatment with minimal side effects.
