Survivor Songs: Radio Hits for People Who Know How to Take Care of Business

By    |   Tuesday, 02 August 2016 04:33 PM EDT

The survivor in each one of us has been heavily influenced by music for thousands of years, and survivor songs continue to win over listeners all over the world.

According to a study published by the National Institutes of Health’s U.S. National Library of Medicine, humans have successfully used music to decrease anxiety during times of stress, as evidenced by changes in the parts of the brain that produce anxiety. Music offers "a means of escape," say the study’s researchers, and significantly improves memory retrieval and mood.

The following survivor songs have been written by and for survivors:

1. “Gonna Fly Now” by Bill Conti (1977)
This theme song from the first two "Rocky" movies was originally written as an instrumental piece and contained just 30 words in the final cut. This song played during one of the most iconic scenes in the movie when Rocky was running up the museum steps and was a sufficient ballad written for “an underdog who fought beyond his abilities through rugged determination,” according to Songfacts.

2. “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson (2011)
Kelly Clarkson’s lyrics: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” reminds listeners to push through life’s battles and not allow the pain to win.

Johnny Nash encourages listeners to believe in a hopeful future during times of desperation, pain, and adversity.

4. “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor (1978)
Recently chosen by the Library of Congress as a “key artifact of American Culture,” CBS News explains that this survivor song was personal for Gloria Gaynor who was a victim of childhood abuse, poverty, and an accident that left her temporarily paralyzed. This song has become an anthem “for those struggling to overcome challenges.”

5. “Rise Up” by Andra Day (2015)
Andra Day’s song offers encouragement, inspiration, and a beautiful reminder that people can “rise up” and conquer anything in spite of their despair, fears, and adversities.
