Prostate Cancer: Top Five Symptoms

Thursday, 21 October 2010 04:24 PM EDT

The prostate, which is a part of the male urinary and reproductive system, has an oval shape. It is found at the base of the bladder, next to the rectum. Till a few years back it was believed that as the prostate and prostate cancer gene were only found in men, women did not classically show any sign and symptoms of prostate cancer. However, in 2002, the female Skene's gland located on the anterior wall of the vagina was officially renamed as the female prostate as it was found to be homologous in function. Studies also showed that the liquid which is expelled during female orgasm has similar chemical composition as that of the semen generated by the male prostate.

The five major signs and symptoms of prostate cancer are:

1.            Frequent urination and the inability to hold back urine
2.           Feeling like the bladder is still full and difficulty in starting or stopping urine flow
3.           Burning or pain during urination
4.           Presence of blood in semen or urine
5.           Pain while ejaculating

As the tumor worsens, the cyst in the prostate gland can totally block the urine flow resulting in an enlarged and painful urinary bladder.

Signs and symptoms of prostate cancer in dogs
Prostate glands are also found in male dogs. However, sterilizing or neutering the dog minimizes his chances of getting prostate trouble as the prostate is removed.
Prostate cancer symptoms in dogs largely mimic the signs of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH). Although this is not cancerous, it can cause troublesome symptoms as they age. Symptoms of prostate cancer in dogs include painful urination, blood in the urine, incontinence and weight loss. However, the most common canine prostate cancer symptoms are the inability to urinate and defecate.

Prognosis of prostate cancer

Other health conditions can have the same signs and symptoms as prostate cancer. So having any of the above symptoms does not necessarily mean one has prostate cancer. Consult with your doctor if you feel that your body shows any signs and symptoms of prostate cancer.
