8 Tips for a Perfectly Straight Golfing Drive

By    |   Wednesday, 15 August 2018 09:47 AM EDT

Some golfers struggle off the tee, missing out on a perfectly straight golfing drive. They’d love to have a straight tee shot for better drives, which is easily achievable with these tips.

The first thing to know is that you’re not alone when it comes to trying for a straighter drive. Many golfers don’t put the emphasis needed at the tee for a better swing and more confidence.

Try these eight tips for a perfectly straight golfing drive:

1. The right mental state — Maybe you get nervous at the tee. Butch Harmon points out in Golf Digest that this can cause a fast and short backswing. To relieve the tension, turn the left or lead shoulder behind the ball, he suggests, for a better full rotation.

2. Unlock your body — Pressure at the tee could also freeze up your movement. Get loose and keep the motion in your fingers and feet. Move the club back and forth to relax your nerves. The motion will give you a proper swing.

3. Avoid slicing — A slice will put the club face to the side for an ineffective spin. Keep the right shoulder back as the club drops to the inside when you move down and have your back face the target during the downswing, making a full turn behind the ball.

4. Kick your heel down — Let the heel dislodge some dirt from the tee box and use the dirt as a platform, Golf.com recommends for a straight golfing drive. This provides a low tee for a good spin to curve the ball.

5. Decide on the ball flight — Instead of just hitting for a target, plan the shot according to the hitting zone, according to Duke University. Before you swing, decide on a straight, slight draw, or slight fade option for a more accurate ball flight.

6. Match up your desired shot — Try to center the impact of the clubface orientation with the swing path. The swing should move in relation to the target line with an upward or downward angle, depending on the clubhead speed.

7. Hit as far as possible — Many golfers are now concentrating on distance before accuracy, Golf Digest notes. If the ball is hit far enough and straight, control can be handled later.

8. Practice — Use all the elements of your swing for practice and improvement. Perhaps you only need to concentrate on one adjustment at a time, but repeating the changes in your swing will create confidence for a perfectly straight golfing drive.
