West Virginia leans on traditional agricultural roots for food. Travel tips for foodies includes a taste of the Golden Delicious Apple and like the sweet goodness of that fruit, the Mountain State is full of spots that combine comfort food with a modern twist.

Here are seven places to visit for food loving travelers:

1. Bluegrass Kitchen: This Charleston restaurant provides "farm-to-table comfort food with a modern edge." Try the trout and grits served with kale and a bourbon mustard-dill sauce.

2. 1863 Grill: Make sure to taste the sugary cinnamon roll specialty or have a glass of the secret family recipe lemonade. This restaurant has been serving up southern steaks, burgers and BBQ for 50 years, but ventures into sushi and offers cooking classes.

3. Hillbilly Hotdogs: This place makes no apologies for the Mountain State's claim that it's the "hot-dog capital of the world." The menu includes Chuck's Junk Yard Dog which has BBQ and jalepeno peppers, the Hillbilly dog, which is actually deep fried and the 15 inch "Homewrecker" that comes with a challenge: those who can eat it in under 12 minutes can get it for free.

4. Canal House: Housed in a historic 1820s building, Canal House offers an organic dining experience for foodies. The owners here "personally source" ingredients, meeting and working with the farmers who provide produce and meat for their tables. The restaurant's Appalachian Trail Salad includes roasted beets, butternut squash and Shepherds Whey goat cheese.

5. Fresh Seafood Company: Located in Charleston's Capitol Market, the Fresh Seafood specializes in a deep fried cod "Big fish" sandwich. Those who don't want fish can order a variety of other lunch-type fare including hot dogs.

6. Holly River Restaurant: Hacker Valley is home to homemade lasagna and berry pies  It specializes in home-cooked taste and is located at Holly River State Park.

7. Panorama at the Peak: Berkeley Springs is home to a restaurant that strives to buy food within a 65 mile radius, focuses on organic and humanely raised food.
