Pet owners looking for small dogs for the home have many different types of dogs to choose from. Many of these house companions also enjoy the great outdoors. They are friendly and stick close to their owners.

Here are eight breeds that will remain small in size.

Latest: Tell Us About Your Pets! Which Do You Have?

• A Maltese is small but fearless. These dogs love to play and are filled with energy in their 2- to 7-pound frames. They love being indoors and outdoors. Maltese dogs are often good with children, but they do have a tendency to nip when playing, so it is important to socialize and train them at a young age.

• Pugs are usually 15 to just over 20 pounds. They are outgoing and loyal. They are comfortable playing, following their owners around, or sitting close by to someone. They love a great deal of attention, including cuddling and being petted.

• Toy poodles are usually only 6 to 9 pounds and about 10 inches high. They make wonderful family pets and become attached to all members of the family. They are types of dogs that need attention but bring pet owners lots of fun because they love to play with toys or chase balls.

• Chihuahuas can be between 3 and 7 pounds and are wonderful lap dogs, but they are also very protective and can act aggressively if someone comes close to the owner. Once anyone gets to know them, however, they become friendly with adults and children.

Tell Us: Buying or Adopting? How Did You Get Your Pets?

• Yorkshire terriers are devoted companions that crave attention. They love adventure outside as well as the comforts of home. They might be small, but they remain active and enjoy playing with families and children.

• Boston terriers are lively and fun-loving. They range in weight from about 15 to 20 pounds, but they have plenty of strength. This makes them energetic for runs or playing outside while they also make great pets for the home.

• Shih tzus remain small and gentle at between 11 and 16 pounds. They have beautiful, soft and silky coats that need regular grooming. They like to be protective when strangers are around and they are good with children.

• A Pomeranian is an energetic dog, despite its continued small size. It will be about 4 to 7 pounds when fully grown. Pomeranians are types of dogs that are protective of the home and bark whenever they become aware of changes in the environment.
